Individual Sessions

Do you struggle with feelings of inadequacy, anger, or depression? Do you feel ill-equipped to deal with conflict, the challenges of personal or professional relationships? Are you seeking ways to cope with trauma or illness?

Individual therapy can help you with these and related concerns. Depending on your needs, sessions can be conducted in person or by phone or Skype. When appropriate, we also offer out-of-office sessions. (See “Types of Therapy Sessions” below for more information.) Individual therapy sessions are fifty minutes long.

At the Bay Area CBT Center, we help you to identify and overcome the obstacles that prevent you from living the kind of life you desire. To assist you in this process, we offer therapy for individuals and couples as well as twelve-week group therapy sessions that focus on particular issues and concerns. For your convenience, we have offices in San Francisco and Oakland.

Because we believe that the client-therapist relationship is crucial for progress to be made, we offer initial free consultation sessions to prospective clients. We want to be certain that you find the therapist who is right for you.

How to Begin Individual Therapy

In this consultation session, we will discuss your concerns, evaluate your needs, and give you a good sense of what we believe maintains your current problems. Together we will then explore therapeutic approaches that may help with the challenges you face. We will also consider our “fit” for working together. We believe it is important to find a therapist who is a good fit for you and who possesses qualities such as personality style, therapeutic stance, and values that resonate with you. Having an authentic and genuine connection with your therapist is essential.

If we believe that we can work well together, and if we agree on the target goals for therapy as well as the approach we will take, we will then begin our work in subsequent sessions. In the first few sessions, we will continually refine our assessment of your needs and your specific goals for therapy. We will continue to monitor your progress and goals throughout our time together.

Types of Therapy Sessions:

In Person

This is the most frequent type of therapy session. You come to one of our offices—in San Francisco or Oakland and meet with your therapist there.

 Skype or Phone Therapy

We know that in today’s fast-paced world, it’s often difficult to make time for self-care. Therefore, we also offer sessions by Skype or phone to help you fit your psychological health care into your busy schedule. Another option is to alternate between Skype, phone sessions, and in-office sessions, depending on your specific needs.

 Therapy Outside of the Office

If your situation warrants it, we also provide therapy outside the office. For example, if you struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), hoarding, or social anxiety, we may conduct therapy-assisted exposures and accompany you to the location or situation that you fear. Practicing exposure in the real world is the most effective and efficient way to overcome OCD, hoarding, social anxiety, and specific phobias. In this form of exposure treatment, your therapist will go with you to the feared location or situation, such as driving on a bridge, going to a crowded shopping mall, or visiting a dog park, and provide you with the coaching you need in the moment. This helps you develop the tools you need to cope more effectively with your anxiety on your own.
