About Dr. Grinsell

Dr. Nicole Grinsell is a licensed clinical psychologist in California (PSY 36432). She works with people who are accomplished on the outside and quietly exhausted on the inside — clients who often arrive with anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, or relentless self-criticism, and discover that those struggles are rarely the whole story.

She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Meridian University and a Master's from the University of San Francisco. Her doctoral training spanned psychological assessment, inpatient and outpatient care, community mental health, and integrative healthcare. Her dissertation — Gaze Upon Me: The Soul of the Female Beauty Paradox — examined how performance-based environments shape women's self-image at the level of identity rather than symptom.

Alongside her clinical training, Dr. Grinsell worked in the fashion industry and in San Francisco's tech world. That lived experience informs her work with high-achieving clients navigating chronic self-pressure, visibility, and identity transitions — people who know how to look composed while privately bracing, monitoring, and striving.

Her approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with psychodynamic and somatic work — practical, evidence-based tools paired with depth-oriented therapy that shifts underlying patterns, not just the symptoms they create. She also draws on relational and attachment-informed therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), AEDP, and Somatic Experiencing.

Dr. Grinsell provides clinical supervision and mentorship for early-career clinicians and is co-founder of The Integration Collective. She is a coauthor of "The Need for Establishing Best Practices and Gold Standards in Psychedelic Medicine" (Journal of Affective Disorders, 2023). At Bay Area CBT Center, she offers online therapy across California.

A Personal Note from Dr. Nicole

My Approach to Healing

I'm Dr. Nicole Grinsell, a licensed clinical psychologist in California (PSY 36432). I work with people who are accomplished on the outside and quietly exhausted on the inside. They often arrive in therapy because of anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, or relentless self-criticism — but those struggles are rarely the whole story.

Together, we look beneath the symptoms to understand the deeper patterns that shaped how you learned to find safety, build self-worth, and make sense of yourself, long before you had any say in it. Those patterns may have helped you survive or succeed, but they can also keep you stuck long after they've stopped serving you.

My approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with psychodynamic and somatic work — practical, evidence-based tools paired with depth-oriented work that shifts the underlying patterns, not just the symptoms they create.

I specialize in high-functioning anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, self-worth and self-image concerns, major life transitions, and grief. Many clients have spent years understanding themselves intellectually, yet still find themselves repeating the same patterns. Therapy becomes a place to move beyond insight alone — to understand why those patterns persist, and begin experiencing yourself differently.

My style is warm, collaborative, and attuned to what's happening beneath the surface: the constant bracing, the internal monitoring, the drive to achieve that never quite brings relief. Clients often leave with a steadier sense of self, greater trust in their own experience, and more ease.

Over time, both mind and body begin to feel less like something to manage and more like home.
