The Self-Compassion Break

If you've done this before

For self-criticism, shame, and the feeling that you're the only one failing at this.

  1. Name it plainly: this is a moment of suffering. Not dramatic — just true.
  2. Place a hand where the feeling lives. Chest, stomach, throat.
  3. Say: suffering is part of being a person. I'm not the only one who feels this.
  4. Ask what you'd say to a close friend in this exact position — then say that to yourself, in those words.
  5. Then widen the circle: may I be at ease with this. May you be at ease with this — picturing someone specific. May everyone struggling with this be at ease with it.

Why it works: Shame's core move is isolation — the belief that your failure is uniquely yours. Kristin Neff's research identifies common humanity as one of the three components that make self-compassion work, and the widening circle at the end is what dismantles the isolation directly.
