Physicalizing the Emotion

When you can't stop the thoughts

For feelings too big to think about — grief, shame, dread.

  1. Find where the feeling lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach, jaw.
  2. If it had a colour, what colour? A shape? A size? A texture? Is it moving or still?
  3. Stop trying to shrink it. Instead, make room around it — imagine the space it's in getting bigger.
  4. Breathe into that space. Send it something kind: it makes sense that this is here.
  5. Stay with it for a few breaths. Notice whether it shifts on its own.

Why it works: Describing a feeling's physical qualities moves it from raw affect into observable detail. Making room for it, rather than fighting it, is what lets the intensity fall on its own.
